Mission

The Centre will work and give services or products as summarized below:

General Missions

  • To use our knowledge in Signal Processing as a basis for promoting Information Engineering and Multimedia Technology within Hong Kong.

  • To make use of a strong research base to further enhance the research contributions from Hong Kong in the international arena.

  • To port academic research results into practical use, benefiting the industrial, commercial and service sectors of Hong Kong.

Specific deliverables

  • To enhance the research group project 'Intelligent Video Conference System for Multimedia Applications', with the objective of designing an Intelligent Video Conferencing System which will be able to do video conferencing via communication channels and perform information exchange and multimedia functions. (These include speech recognition, secretarial services, documentation and intelligent services.) The results should allow daily video conferencing among colleagues within Universities in Hong Kong. The new techniques will also be particularly useful to local industrialists who are interested in the development of modern video conferencing systems and contemporary multimedia applications.

  • To start a group project on the exploitation of trends and technologies in specific areas of DSP, such as Video Technology, Digital and High Definition TV, and their applications to multimedia development in Hong Kong. This will be extremely useful for the future direction of multimedia IT development in Hong Kong, with the Centre serving as a technical consultant to the Hong Kong SAR Government in the area.

  • To continue our excellent tradition of publishing our new discoveries and theories in renowned journals, conferences, etc.

  • To produce prototypes and frameworks for signal processing products.

  • To transfer up-dated research outcomes and modern techniques to industrial companies, especially to enhance their product design, to suggest innovative products, and to resolve production problems.

  • To offer short courses on cutting-edge technologies, and undertake in-house training for industries, commercial firms, and the service sector in Hong Kong and mainland China.

  • To provide the necessary technical support and consultancy to the SAR government in its strategic planning for Hong Kong hi-tech development in the areas of Signal Processing and Multimedia Technology.

Long Term Objectives

We aim to become the major research centre in the area of Multimedia Signal Processing in South East Asia within three years, and to become one of the important centres of excellence in this area in the world within eight years. Currently, staff members of the group have already achieved good international status, and possess the potential and track records to complete these tasks.

We aspire to become a "mini MIT" Media Laboratory, mainly looking into the Digital Signal Processing aspects of Multimedia Technologies, while our operation and size will grow to resemble the Photovoltaics Special Research Centre at New South Wales University in Australia.
