The Centre for Signal Processing was set up in the department of Electronic and Information Engineering of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 1998, with the initial name of Centre for Multimedia Signal Processing. The centre is led by Professor Wan-Chi Siu, who is an international figure in Digital Signal Processing, an IEEE Fellow, a Vice-President of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (2012-2014), and President-Elect of the Asia Pacific Signal and Information Association (2014-2015). He also has fruitful experiences in editorial work, sitting on the Publication Board of the IEEE SP Society, and Associate Editor/Guest Editor of IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, IEEE Transactions on Circuits & Systems for Video Technology, etc.

Members of the team have different expertise. They are all in the area of signal and information processing. They are scholars with good international status. All are very active in research and professional activities. Most of them are Editor, Associate Editor, and/or Guest Editor of international journals, and are also the General Chair, Program Chair, Finance Chair or Executive Secretary of International Conferences.

The objectives of the centre are, first, to conduct cutting-edge research in the area of signal and information processing for multimedia applications with high-level international publications; second, to take further leadership in the world's professional organizations in terms of key leaders of professional bodies and chief organizers of the world's most important conferences, and editorship of top international journals in our area; and third to make use of our research results for the promotion of industrial innovations and the development of new products, especially products that are suitable for production in Hong Kong and nearby areas.
