Frequently Asked Questions

1.
What is the credit requirement for graduation?

You are required to acquire a total of 71 credits with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or above for graduation. Each subject carries 3 credits, except the project in the final year with 6 credits and the General Education subject.

2.
What are the grades I should get in order to stay in the programme?

Grade Point Average (GPA) is the weighted average of grades of all subjects taken by a student (weighted by the credit value of each subject). You would be required to withdraw if
  1. Your GPA is lower than 2.0 for two consecutive semesters and your Semester GPA in the second semester is also lower than 2.0, or
  2. Your GPA is lower than 2.0 for three consecutive semesters, or
  3. Your academic performance is poor to the extent that the Board of Examiners deems that your chance of attaining a GPA of 2.0 at the end of the programme is slim or impossible.

3.
What are the chances of getting into a degree programme offered by PolyU after completing HD year one?

There are three possible routes but they are mutually exclusive:

  1. Applying for internal Transfer of Study (based on HD1 results) with appropriate credit transfer. This will require excellent academic results in HD1. Special approval by the Dean is required if you have not fulfilled the minimum HKAL entrance requirements. The deadline for application for transfer of study is 31st March each year. You will be exempted from most first year degree subjects because of the credit transfer; OR
  2. Applying through JUPAS (based on HKAL results) with appropriate credit transfer. This will mean that you have to sit for the HKAL again; OR
  3. Applying through Non-JUPAS (based on HD1 results) as a private student with appropriate credit transfer. This will require excellent academic results in HD1 and special approval by the Dean.

4.
What are the chances of getting into a degree programme offered by PolyU after graduation from the HD programme?

You may apply for BSc(Hons) Degree Programme in Internet and Multimedia Technologies offered by the EIE Department or other part-time computing/IT related degree programmes offered by PolyU. The advice to our HDMMC students is that they should try to achieve a GPA above 3.0 to get a very good chance to be admitted into any degree programme. Also note that other universities class admit HD graduates directly to the pre-final year of their degree programmes.

5.
