Higher Diploma Programme in Electronic & Information Engineering
(Programme Code: 42075)

Frequently Asked Questions

1.
What is the credit requirement for graduation?

You are required to acquire a total of 60 credits with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or above for graduation. Most subjects carry 3 credits, except the project in the final year with 6 credits and some other subjects as specified (please click here for details). In addition, you have to pass the Industrial Centre practical training.

2.
What are the grades I should get in order to stay in the programme?

Grade Point Average (GPA) is the weighted average of grade points of all subjects taken by a student (weighted by the credit value of each subject). You would be required to withdraw if
  1. Your GPA is lower than 2.0 for two consecutive semesters and your Semester GPA in the second semester is also lower than 2.0, or
  2. Your GPA is lower than 2.0 for three consecutive semesters, or
  3. Your academic performance is poor to the extent that the Board of Examiners deems that your chance of attaining a GPA of 2.0 at the end of the programme is slim or impossible.

3.
What are the chances of getting into the Full-time BEng(Hons) Degree Programme in Electronic and Information Engineering or Full-time BSc(Hons) Degree Programme in Internet and Multimedia Technologies after completing HD year one?

There are three possible routes but they are mutually exclusive:

  1. Applying for internal Transfer of Study (based on HD1 results) with appropriate credit transfer. This will require excellent academic results in HD1. Special approval by the Dean is required if you have not fulfilled the minimum HKAL entrance requirements. The deadline for application for transfer of study is 31st March each year. You will be exempted from most first year degree subjects because of the credit transfer; OR
  2. Applying through JUPAS (based on HKAL results) with appropriate credit transfer. This will mean that you have to sit for the HKAL again; OR
  3. Applying through Non-JUPAS (based on HD1 results) as a private student with appropriate credit transfer. This will require excellent academic results in HD1 and special approval by the Dean.

4.
What are the chances of getting into the BEng(Hons) Degree Programme in Electronic and Information Engineering or Full-time BSc(Hons) Degree Programme in Internet and Multimedia Technologies after graduation from the HD programme?

You may pursue further study for a BEng(Hons)/BSc(Hons) degree through the following routes:

  1. Applying through JUPAS (based on HKAL results) for admission into the full-time BEng(Hons) Degree Programme in EIE with appropriate credit transfer. This will mean that you have to sit for the HKAL again; OR
  2. Applying through Non-JUPAS (based on HD results) for admission into the full-time Degree Programme in EIE as an Advanced Standing Student with appropriate credit transfer. You will need to spend about two years of study on the degree programme after obtaining exemption of credits. Typically 4 students are admitted through this route each year.

The advice to our HD students is that if they achieved Credit or above in their HD overall academic results, they will have a very good chance to be admitted into the full-time EIE Degree programmes through route 4(ii) above. Also note that many UK and Australia universities admit HD graduates directly to the pre-final or final year of their degree programmes.

5.
What are the prospects of HDEIE graduates?

Almost all HDEIE graduates are capable of finding relevant jobs in the fields of electronic and information engineering or pursuing further study. Destinations of 2004 HDEIE graduates (as at December 2004) are as follows:

Employed/Self-employed: 42.2% (with average salary of HK$7,695)
Engaged in part-time/Temporary job: 2.2%
Full-time further study: 48.9%
