BEng(Hons) Degree Programme in Electronic & Information Engineering
(Programme Code: 42070)

Frequently Asked Questions

1.
What is the credit requirement for graduation?

You are required to acquire a total of 90 credits with a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or above for graduation with the award of the BEng(Hons) degree in EIE and 131 credits with GPA of 2.0 or above for graduation with the Double Degree Award in BEng(Hons) Degree in EIE and BSc(Hons) Degree in EP (Engineering Physcis). At least 71 credits and 18 credits are needed for students taking the major and minor routes respectively.

Each subject carries 3 credits, except the Honours Project in the final year with 6 credits. In addition, you have to fulfill the Work-Integrated Education requirement, University Language requirements and Co-curricular Activity requirement for graduation.

2.
What are the grades I should get in order to stay in the programme?

Grade Point Average (GPA) is the weighted average of grades of all subjects taken by a student (weighted by the credit value of each subject). You would be required to withdraw if

  1. Your GPA is lower than 2.0 for two consecutive semesters and your Semester GPA in the second semester is also lower than 2.0, or
  2. Your GPA is lower than 2.0 for three consecutive semesters, or
  3. Your academic performance is poor to the extent that the Board of Examiners deems that your chance of attaining a GPA of 2.0 at the end of the programme is slim or impossible.

3.
What future opportunities of further education in EIE, PolyU are there?

You have ample opportunities to pursue further study after graduation. You can join

  1. The part-time taught programme "Degree of Master of Science (MSc)/Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in Electronic and Information Engineering" offered by the EIE Department, OR
  2. The full-time or part-time research degree programme "Degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil)" offered by the EIE Department.

The competition for admission to these programmes is very keen. We normally admit students with second class (first division) honours degrees or higher. If you have a first class honours degree, you are almost guaranteed a place in the above two higher degree programmes. You will have a better chance of admission to one of these programmes if you achieved outstanding academic results. Further up the steps are PhD and EngD in EIE. For admission into a PhD programme, you should register initially for the Degree of MPhil with a possibility of a transfer to the Degree of PhD.

4.
Almost all EIE BEng(Hons) graduates are capable of finding relevant jobs in the fields of electronic and information engineering or pursuing further study. Destinations of 2004 EIE BEng graduates (as at December 2004) are as follows:

Employed/Self-employed: 76.9% (with average salary of HK$9,279)
