Major research endeavours within the Department are conducted within four research groups. The foci of these groups are nonlinear circuits and systems (including power electronics, wireless power transfer technologies, renewable energy systems, LED lighting systems and complex networks), communications (including optical and wireless communications, vehicular communications, channel coding, optical sensor systems), signal processing and artificial intelligence (video and image coding, speech and pattern recognition, artificial intelligence and machine learning) and photonic systems and devices (information optics and photovoltaic devices). Other research topics include information security, bio-inspired optimisation techniques and forensics. Currently, over a hundred funded research projects are being undertaken. The Nonlinear Circuits and Systems Research Group's main research interests include power electronics, lighting and energy systems, nonlinear dynamics, sensor networks, complex networks, data analysis, transportation networks, communication networks and systems. Active research topics include:

The Communications Research Group undertakes research in communication theory, system design, analysis and implementations. The range of research areas covers optical fibre communication systems and networks, wireless communication systems and networks, channel coding, acoustic sensing and signal processing.
Some examples of our current research work include transmission technology for high capacity optical communication systems; visible light communications; distributed optical fibre sensing systems, low-density parity-check code design and decoder design; and smart mobility technologies.
Current Research Topics:
The Photonic Systems and Devices Research Group is examining new microscopy techniques for 3D imaging and localized detection of analytes using plasmonics and guided waves.
